It isn't explicit here, but using column will allow the flex grid to arrange items however it likes using the flex basis as a guide. Alternatively, using column col-X means I want this to be X size, taking up X number of column sizes, also using flex basis as a guide.
In general, it's probably best to use column when you can and just let the grid system figure it out.
